JOHN 14:1-6

1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.

2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

4 And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.

5 Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?

6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Earl Thomas Brown

June 15, 1951 - February 20, 2016

Earl Thomas Brown entered the world on June 15, 1951 in Tarboro, North Carolina. Earl attended the public school system in Princeville and Tarboro graduating from W.A. Pattillo High School as an honor student and star basketball player. He worked in his free time on the local farms and in retail stores throughout the community. Recently he was recognized as an Outstanding Graduate from W. A. Pattillo High School.

He left Princeville to attend North Carolina Agricultural and Technical University in Greensboro, North Carolina where he received his Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Computer Science. While there, he befriended Melvin and Thomas Johnson, who would later become his brothers in law. One of his many accomplishments was the computerization of the grading system at the college as a work study student. While at North Carolina A & T, he met and married his wife of 45 years Dr. Hazel J. Brown. Later he received the distinguished Alumnus Award from the University.

Upon graduating, he began his career working at Jefferson Pilot Life Insurance Company as a computer analyst. Shortly after the birth of Derek Keane, the family moved to Hillsborough, North Carolina and began working for North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance while Dr. Brown began her studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Dentistry. While at North Carolina Mutual, he made lifelong friends in Richalean Tucker (Derek's Godmother) and others.

With Dr. Brown graduating in 1978 from Dental School, the family came home to Eastern North Carolina. Earl began working at what was formerly known as Burroughs Wellcome where he worked tirelessly as a systems programmer for 20 years. Between working double and triple shifts, he found time to enjoy and participate in his son's education and sports activities, bowling, become an avid motorcyclist and pilot. He was known for traveling to Canada and beyond on his motorcycle as he explored the world.

Over the next several years Earl ventured into many different businesses and in the pursuit of his childhood dreams. His first childhood dream was to become a pilot like his favorite TV show, "Sky King". In 1980 he received his private pilot's license and soon opened a Charter Flight Service out of Greenville and Robersonville, North Carolina. During the business venture, he partnered with Gene Powell and family in the aviation business. He joined his brother in law, Thomas J. Johnson, Jr., and longtime family friend Lawrence Behr in the acquisition, procurement, and sales of radio towers and radio frequencies across the United States. Soon he and the family started HED Partnership that was responsible for the acquisition and management of residential and commercial properties in Pitt County. HED Partnership was converted to Brown Property Management, LLC which then expanded to Automated Teller Machines throughout Eastern North Carolina.

In the summer of 1988 he decided to pursue his second childhood dream, to become an attorney like "Perry Mason." He applied and was accepted at Campbell University Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law. While in law school, he befriended his Professors J. Stanley McQuade and Richard Rogers. As interns with the professors he modernized the school with the development, implementation, and usage of computers in law in the aspect of research and data management. He was later recognized with Professor Richard Rogers by American Bar Association for their endeavors. He made long lasting friendships with classmate attorneys Tim Joines, Cynthia Mills and Troy Stafford, Superior Court Judge Elect Jeffery Foster, District Attorney Seth Edwards and United States Magistrate Judge Kimberly A. Swank. During the summer of his 1st year of law school he had the opportunity to intern at Poyner and Spruill, LLP at their Rocky Mounty office. During the summer of his 2nd year, he traveled to Guatemala and attended Universidad Mariano Galvez De Guatemala School of Law where he participated with the local missions in providing housing, water, and sewer to the local population.

After graduating Law School and passing the bar in 1991, he began his law career as a prosecutor in the 6B Prosecutorial District of Bertie, Hertford, and Northampton Counties with the elected District Attorney the Honorable David Beard. While there, he had the opportunity to serve as the Roanoke Chowan Drug Task Force Prosecutor and prosecute cases in District and Superior Court. He later joined the firm of Revelle, Burleson, Lee and Revelle LLP in Murfreesboro, North Carolina before opening his on practice originally known as the Law Offices of Earl T. Brown, P.C.

During his practice, he had the privilege of working with and mentoring attorneys Mike Rizzi, John Ross, his son Derek, the Honorable Regina R. Parker District Court Judge, Demyra McDonald, C. Tyrell Clemons, and currently R. Matt Gibson. He served the local bar in various capacities including the Pitt County Bar President and Ethics Grievance Chair. He mentored local students and served a motivational speaker for various schools throughout Eastern North Carolina. He worked with local agencies and charities including STRIVE, Inc. with Joyce Jones. He had a general practice that had the privilege of practicing in the local State Courts, the Court of Appeals and other Administrative Agencies and culminated with being sworn into the United States Supreme Court.

During the course of his life and practice, Attorney Earl T. Brown was recognized and awarded numerous times for his accomplishments in and out of the Courtroom. But his biggest accomplishment was being able to be there when needed, to listen and to encourage. He was an original member of Macedonia Baptist Church of Princeville, North Carolina and later a member of Sycamore Hill Missionary Baptist Church of Greenville, North Carolina where he served as the Director of Transportation.

Attorney Earl Thomas Brown is survived by his loving wife and companion Dr. Hazel Johnson Brown, son Derek Keane Brown (Joni Marie); grandchildren, Austin Keane, Alanna Louisa and Myles Thomas; his mother, Anna B. SHIRLEY FREEMAN

BURLINGTON - On July 5, 2015 Mrs. Shirley B. Freeman went home to God and to the waiting arms of her beloved husband John A. Freeman. John had left this earth on June 7, 2015, and thus he did not have to wait long to be once again united with his soul mate and his lifetime love, his precious wife Shirley. She was the daughter of the late Irene Bullock.

For all who knew her, Shirley will be remembered with love, with admiration and with lasting respect. In every way, she epitomized the Bible's description of a good wife. Her life was devoted to the full support of her husband, her son, her church, and her entire community. She was a strong woman who was gifted with grace and an unusual ability to serve as a peacemaker. Before serving as a guidance counselor at Walter Williams High School, she taught in the Edgecombe County school system. As a guidance counselor at Williams High School, Shirley gracefully faced racial unrest with an unyielding smile and an unblinking eye on a peaceful adjustment for each tomorrow.

Although Shirley and John lived in Cummings High School's "front yard", Shirley's daily trek across town yielded a wealth of success for the whole Burlington community. She was a leader and a beloved counselor who brought cohesion and stability to every challenge. Shirley never hesitated to give fully of herself to those in need. She was a graduate of NC A&T State University and also graduated with a Masters' Degree from North Carolina Central University. She was also a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.

She is survived by her son, Ken Freeman (Stephanie) of Clinton, Md.; two grandsons, Jordan B. Freeman and Brian Freeman; and a host of relatives, family and friends.

A public viewing will be held from 1 until 8 p.m. in the Roy Blackwell Chapel of Blackwell Funeral Home on Friday, July 10, 2015. A wake will be held on Friday from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Roy Blackwell Chapel.

The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 11, 2015, at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter, 320 E. Davis Street. The family will arrive at 10 a.m. The body will lie in state from 9 until 11 a.m. with a viewing held from 9 to 10 a.m. During this time, there will be a pinning ceremony by the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.
